The Connection Between Mindfulness and Success

the-connection-between-mindfulness-and-success

Today, everybody on social media appears to be heading towards success. Whether it is the case regarding academic success, professional success, or achievements in personal life, success is a defining end for every person. Do you ever wonder about the underlying secret of authentic success? Is it really hard work and determination, as most people assume, or is there another secret behind it? A great deal of growing research has pointed out that practising mindfulness could be a key factor behind the success of an individual. What does mindfulness mean, and how may it support individuals in achieving success

Mindfulness is about being present and mindful at all times. It is the ability to be mindful of our thoughts, feelings, or surroundings without always reacting to them. Despite how easy it sounds and maybe even trivially easier to practice, it is a very potent tool to amplify our personal and professional lives.

What is Mindfulness?

This concept evolved in the modern era from ancient meditation practices, especially  Buddhism. Today, a growing number of individuals are embracing this practice. Mindfulness is the process of focusing on the present moment with intention and non-judgment. This could be through practice, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, or even just paying attention to our daily activities. That means you can have a casual evening with coffee, pay attention to the flavours, smell the aroma, and enjoy how warm the mug is in your hand. Mindfulness creates a wonderful calm feeling inside you just when you start the day.

The Science Behind Mindfulness

Recent research has indicated that mindfulness is a powerful brain-changing intervention.  In an article published recently at Harvard University, it was shown that regular mindfulness increased gray matter in areas of the brain specialized for memory, learning,  and emotional regulation – helping us be calm but also sharpening our cognitive capabilities better to work problems through more effectively.

A neuroscientist at Harvard, Sara Lazar, who conducted a 2011 study discovered that even after eight weeks of mindfulness meditation, participants showed increased gray matter density in the hippocampus region of the brain, relating to learning and memory.

Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence

One crucial characteristic that would ensure success has to do with emotional intelligence: the ability to identify, understand, and appropriately release our emotions while also recognizing and understanding those of others. Mindfulness can be an immensely practical tool in this regard, becoming more keenly aware of our thoughts and feelings so we don’t respond impulsively but rather respond.

For example, imagine yourself in a stressful meeting. Rather than letting frustration overwhelm your mind, a mindful brain would take a deep breath, acknowledge the frustration, and let it pass without reacting impulsively in the heat of the moment. This process of checking and reflecting prevents friction and makes better decision-making a critical aspect of success and maybe even better relationships.

Mindfulness and Productivity

It’s tough to concentrate when the world outside keeps distracting you. Most people easily multitask as they think it enables them to accomplish more. However, research has proved that it lowers productivity. The human brain is designed not to focus on anything but one thing at a time. Instead, high-speed switching between tasks leads to many more mistakes and mental exhaustion.

Mindfulness encourages someone to focus on one thing at a time. When fully present, you can work much more efficiently and produce higher-quality results. For example,  research conducted on it proved that those individuals practising mindfulness completed tasks better than others and did not commit as many errors as the latter.

Mindfulness Reduce Stress and Increases Resilience

Stress is one of the major barriers to success when it starts to overwhelm. Anytime we feel stressed, our thinking becomes clouded with what has happened or would happen about that concern, hence making it hard to think clearly or make sound decisions. Mindfulness helps us to manage stress and to be present in our lives as opposed to getting caught up in what might happen in the future.

One of the experts who have contributed to the research in this field is the founder of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, Jon Kabat-Zinn. He performed a study that proved mindfulness could significantly reduce the stress of a person. He had over 200 participants in his study and found that the level of stress in the experimental group was reduced by 35% compared to the control group. Additionally, mindfulness enhances resilience—the ability to recover from setbacks. Through mindfulness practice, we learn to view challenges as a natural part of life, which reduces the likelihood of feeling overwhelmed.

Mindfulness in the Workplace

Many of the most successful companies today—Google, Apple, and Nike, to name a few— have come to appreciate mindfulness and have strongly incorporated it into their corporate culture. The companies allow for mindfulness training among the employees, which, as experience now shows, will enhance job satisfaction, reduce burnout, and raise productivity.

For example, a Forbes report pointed out that companies that spend money on mindfulness training benefit from incidental returns in their efficiency in employees and decrease the actual cost of healthcare. Mindful workers are more creative and innovative and will solve problems better than others. These are characteristics that can determine success in a workplace setting.

How to Apply Mindfulness Daily

The good news is that mindfulness practice does not require special equipment or a lot of time. Here are some easy ways you can add mindfulness to your daily  practice:

  • Mindful Breathing: Take a few minutes each day to consider your breath. Feel the air going into your body and then out of your lungs. This can calm your mind and settle your thoughts.
  • Mindful Eating: Enjoy the flavour, texture, and aroma of your food. It’s not only enjoyable while eating, but also in understanding yourself more with a healthy relationship with food.
  • Mindful Walking: Savoring every step, whatever brings you to your car or anywhere across the park, definitely leaves you with a clearer mind and less stress.
  • Mindful Listening: If you are speaking with someone, make sure you give them your undivided attention. Listen with really no thought to interrupt or mentally formulate a response. This practice can improve your relationships and communication skills.
Conclusion

Mindfulness is something much more than just a trend; it can transform a life. It will create the way for more success in all personal and professional aspects because, being present and dealing with stress, saves us from being a mere balloon floating with the wind. “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success.” Mindfulness is what can help us find that happiness and thus unlock the doors to true success.
