AIIMS-Delhi introduces training in neuromodulation for mental health

AIIMS-Delhi

On September 5, 2009, the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) facility at AIIMS, New Delhi, was initially established. Since then, the neuromodulation facility, particularly TMS, has grown and made substantial contributions to the country’s neuromodulation field.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (IMCR) designated the TMS facility in the Department of Psychiatry at AIIMS, New Delhi, as the country’s inaugural Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence (CARE) in Neuromodulation for Mental Health.

Training program

The Center for Advanced Research and Excellence in Neuromodulation began a training program for medical professionals at AIIMS on neuromodulation techniques in mental health on December 14, 2023, Thursday. In 2019, the ICMR designated the AIIMS-Delhi psychiatric department’s Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) unit as India’s first Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence (CARE) in Neuromodulation for mental health. The professor in charge of care stated that the department is organizing a nationwide training program in neuromodulation techniques, primarily TMS, from December 14 to 16.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

TMS is a sort of brain stimulation therapy. It is a non-invasive treatment that uses electromagnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells, which may lessen the signs and symptoms of neurological or mental health conditions. TMS may be helpful in treating depression as it addresses the activity of nerve cells in the brain. It might also be beneficial for PTSD, anxiety, and OCD. Additionally, the process might help with motor dysfunction, which would be advantageous for people recovering from stroke, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s disease. TMS is mainly helpful in treating depression. It has helped those who have not responded to antidepressant drugs or psychotherapy. This technique is used for various other disorders such as schizophrenia, resistant depression, etc.

About workshop

With funding from ICMR, the Department of Psychiatry has increased the frequency of its training sessions from once a year to three times a year, as a part of its ongoing dedication to improving the fields of neuropsychiatry and neuromodulation. The workshop provides limited seats, 30 doctors from 14 states, to ensure and maintain an appropriate learning environment. Neuromodulation technique training TMS is quite expensive in Western countries, ranging from USD 2,000 to 3,000 for two to three years. AIIMS-Delhi provides world-class TMS training and three days of certification for just Rs 20,000.
