Unconventional Therapies: You may have not heard before

Therapy is a clinical framework where a clinician works towards alleviating impaired behaviours or emotional aspects that might be causing problems to a person. The clinician utilises various strategies to achieve this goal in such a process and therapy takes form in stages as the client goes through understanding the mechanism of their behaviour. Therapies usually have a specified goal which is worked upon until it is achieved which results in termination of the sessions. Sometimes there might be some logistical issues which could cause the termination, such as insurance, timings etc. Other times rapport formation with your therapist might cause problems which need to be worked upon before.

Therapy has been used in many ways in psychology to help people find the relief they want. There are different types of therapy which are beneficial for a particular kind of problem. Some forms such as CBT or DBT are proficient in dealing with milder disturbances in the psyche, whereas psychoanalysis and other in-depth psychodynamic therapies are worked for more disturbing cases of emotional distresses. The core of therapy remains to help a person alleviate emotional or psychological pain such that they become more comfortable with themselves and can work toward achieving what they aim for.

Here are some forms of therapy which you may not have heard of before and they follow a little unconventional process to help their clients think in newer and more creative ways about their problems.

Hip Hop Therapy

Started by Dr. Edgar Tyson in 1998 this form of therapy built its framework with the therapeutic effect of the culture of hip hop. Started for homeless black youth it helps people use songs as a mode of expression and conversing with other peers as well. The social revolutionary power of hip-hop culture helps the client understand the social aspects of themselves in a bigger picture and also form meaningful relationships with their peers as well. It has proved to be quite helpful for many people.

Forensic Therapy

It is a type of therapy which helps an offender understand any of the offences they have committed. It helps them gain control over themselves. They are able to grasp the knowledge of why they have committed any crime and also move towards change. Forensic therapy takes place in its root from forensic psychiatry and psychoanalysis psychotherapy. It has gone beyond the relationship between a client and a doctor and works upon forming a triangle between the patient, psychotherapist and society. It helps people have gained insight into their behaviours and also improves their future prospects of committing their crimes. They are helped by overcoming the guilt they might be having. Work towards attaining a form of self-love as well and learn how to form relationships that are stable and fulfilling.

Superhero Therapy

This is a type of therapy in which the clinicians use many examples of superheroes for the client to help him build a support system. When we are going through pain and realise some other person goes through a similar kind of painful experience, we feel connected and feel cared for and loved. Once the client identifies the superhero they admire and what is that they like about them. The clinician helps the client express their desire to help the needy and become a kind of superhero themselves. The client then starts seeing himself as a superhero and is able to identify his strengths and weaknesses which impacts their self-esteem as well. When a person starts to live their life through their values and purposes they tend to give importance to themselves and their anxiety or depression diminishes.

Chess Therapy

Chess therapy is very beneficial according to many experts. In this therapeutic set up the client is more excited and creative over an ancient game rather than undergoing deliberate conversations. People think that chess offers a lot of analytics that aid in developing strategies for solving problems. A person playing chess feels like communicating through moving the pieces and is in a trance mode with themselves. He or she is able to understand the inner emotional conflicts they might have and gain control over them with the help of a board game. They are able to express their feelings which they otherwise would not find a way to channel across. As a result, chess therapy helps a person realise their conflicts and pushes them to fight for them by building techniques throughout the games.

Wilderness Therapy

Wilderness therapy is different from adventure therapy as it allows the client or group of people to have an immersive, intensive experience in nature rather than a shorter pre-defined form of experience. Particularly adolescents who engage in maladaptive behaviours utilise it. They experience a change in the environment which invokes introspection and facilitates change. They are able to have experiences which facilitate growth and self-efficacy adn able to learn group dynamics and improve interpersonal relationships with other people. It also helps them foster friendships which helps them improve their interpersonal relations with their families. Wilderness therapy ultimately helps an adolescent feel self-reliant and responsible for themselves. They can channel their excessive and unproductive energy in a more constructive way.

These therapies are very beneficial for their clients. They are able to form bonds and change for the better, alleviating the pain they had felt. Therapies can take any form, what matters is how it changes the client, sees his world and himself. Many new therapies are coming up which are proving to be innovative in things. They use to facilitate the process of healing. People must deal with trauma and comprehend various kinds or methods of doing so. So people can understand more about themselves and their traumas. Therapies help people become more confident and at ease with themselves and hence make the world healthier.
