With an increasing recognition of mental health as a crucial aspect of students’ overall well-being, education departments have been coming up with various initiatives. With increased academic pressure, social challenges and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, students’ mental health has become a major concern.
Bengaluru’s National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) has launched a programme to improve mental health and minimise suicide risks at the state’s educational institutions. It is a programme by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in partnership with Karnataka’s Departments of Health and Education that aims to improve the mental health of students.
It is a three-year project, as a part of ICMR research, to develop evidence-based, scalable and sustainable approaches. A preliminary consultation meeting at Arogya Soudha has been scheduled for June 5th. Officials from the Health and Education Department, NGO representatives, and other mental health professionals would work together on the project’s action plan and look at potential barriers and facilitators in its implementation.

Dr Seema Mehrotra, Principal Investigator and Professor of Clinical Psychology stated that a multidisciplinary team of experts from NIMHANS and the E-Health Research Centre at IIIT-B would work closely with the Karnataka government to carry out the project. The mental health of students is an important issue that is frequently disregarded. The multiple stressors can hinder their academic progress as well as personal growth and development.
