NIMHANS and the non-governmental organization launched a comprehensive mental health initiative for rural area communities in Bengaluru on Monday, December 18, 2023. The program, titled NAMAN objectives include treating mental health illnesses and providing rehabilitation services for adults, adolescents, and senior citizens, in addition to promoting and preventing mental health issues.

Mental health program (NAMAN)
NAMAN was implemented in the state’s Belur taluk as a trial project and is expected to be finished in three years. The health minister said that after a year, we would evaluate the initiative and decide whether to expand it to other taluks. “NAMAN presents hope for people struggling with mental health concerns,” said NIMHANS psychiatry professor. Mental, neurological, and neurosurgical illnesses must be treated using a unified integrated approach. Making sure the whole range of services is crucial, especially for youngsters and adolescents. Elderly mental health issues are frequently disregarded. Loneliness is considered to be the next big pandemic, especially for immigrants and elder people. Because mental healthcare is still stigmatized in this nation, programs like NAMAN are even more important.

In Karnataka and Uttarakhand
To address the mental health requirements of the entire population in the two taluks – Munsiyari in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district and Belur in Karnataka’s Hassan district – the initiative is being implemented in both places. This will assist them in determining whether it is feasible to implement such a scheme across the nation. The initiative intends to employ a lifelong strategy, encompassing all individuals from womb to tomb.

National Tele Mental Health Program:
Acknowledging the potential effects of COVID-19 on individuals’ mental well-being, the government has implemented several measures. This program was started during the COVID-19 pandemic publications have indicated that anxiety and depression were common in India.

The creation of a round-the-clock helpline with mental health specialists to offer psychosocial support to all impacted parties, broken down into target groups such as children, adults, the elderly, women and healthcare personnel. The government has put the National Mental Health Programme into action in order to provide accessible and reasonably priced mental health services to all citizens, especially the impoverished and destitute.
