As the 2020 budget is round the corner, we really wish that this year “MENTAL HEATHCARE” will get the heed it deserves. The Mental Health Act 2017 put down the basic work to enlighten mental healthcare but studies indicate that a conventional price of implementing MHA 2017 is freeze at ₹94,000 crores. If MHA 2017 actually would be put into effect then the government has to increase the budget on mental healthcare mindfully and crucially.
The health sector will have to cope with varying disease sample as India’s census profile ages. As for now, around 197 million people, that is roughly 1 in every 7 person severely suffered from mental illness in 2017. There is a constant increase in the mental disorders cases in India from 1990 to 2017, which indicates the need for implementing effective strategies to control the always-increasing burden.
According to data released by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2018, the USA, Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Sweden, they give on an average 4% of their budget to mental health. But in India, it is just 0.4% of the total budget. Since the condition of mental state in India is not good so the budget this year should look up to MHA 2017 and give a proper funding for extensive mental healthcare infrastructure that must comprise research, framework & enhancement of mental health fraternity.
