The rehabilitation centres are registered institutions in which the professionals provide care that can help the individuals who are physically, mentally, or cognitively affected. The rehabilitation centres help the affected individual recover from their issues with effective treatment and therapies. Family and caregivers play an important role in the process of rehabilitation for the individual. Family members and caregivers provide emotional support to the individual; they help them to do their day-to-day activities and help them in the treatment process.

The importance of the family and the caregiver support

Demi Lovato, the American singer, has openly shared her journey of overcoming mental health challenges with effective and strong support from her mother. This is evidence that family plays a crucial role in the recovery process of an individual who was affected by any mental or physical issues. Family support can help the individual deal with mental or physical problems. The family member’s positive attitudes help the individual to recover from his or her issues. Family participation in the process of recovery for the individual can help to overcome the barriers.  Families that hold hope increase the individual’s confidence to overcome their problem.

  • Emotional support: During the rehabilitation, the individual may experience a different emotional range, like fear and frustration. In that condition, strong emotional support is important to the individuals. Family members and caregivers are the instruments to provide emotional support. The encouragement and motivation given by the family members and caregivers help the individual to focus on the recovery process.
  • Physical support: Physical rehabilitation involves more physical activities like exercises. Family members and caregivers are too important for the individual to do these activities. They help the individuals by assisting with physical tasks. Family members and caregivers are helping the individual to do their day-to-day activities. The physical assistance of a family member improves the self-confidence of the individual.
  • Practical support: Family support includes practical contributions to help improve the rehabilitation environment for the individual. Family members and caregivers consulted and collaborated with the professionals to make rehabilitation set up at their home with safe and necessary equipment. This helps the individual to feel relaxed and comfortable.
  • Boosting motivation: The family members and caregivers motivate the individual to do the tasks that are given by the professionals. They always give them positive words and remarks; these remarks and words increase the individual’s self-confidence. The family member’s motivation helps the individual to get a positive outlook from the recovery.

These supports from the family members and caregivers were needed to overcome the mental or physical issues of an individual.

The Family and Caregivers Support in Rehabilitation

The family members and caregivers are an important part of the rehabilitation process, and the support from them influences the recovery of a person. Family members and caregivers provide motivational support, and they act as cheerleaders, give encouragement, and improve the morale of the individual. They always believe in the ability of an individual to recover from the issues. Research suggests some roles of the family members and caregivers help to improve the recovery process of the individual. They are the following:

  • Companionship: The companionship of the family members and the caregivers indicates doing activities together in the recovery process.
  • Influence: The caregivers and the family members influence the individual to recover; for example, the caregiver uses a discussion as an influence.
  • Validation: the caregivers and the family members validate every activity of the individual; this validation acts as reinforcement (motivation) to the individual.
  • The presence: The presence of the family member and the caregivers is important when the individual faces difficulties and challenges in the recovery process.
  • Emotional support: The caregiver’s and family members’ emotional support builds the individual as an emotionally strong individual, and that promotes the recovery process.
  • Instrumental support: The family members and the caregivers provide instrumental support to the individual to do their tasks. Instrumental support is the sense of giving specific support to the individual.
  • Communication: Communication takes place in different aspects; they are listening,  discussion, verbal expressions, and understanding. Communication helps the caregivers and family members to motivate the individual.

Support from another person is too important for an individual who has gone through difficulties and struggles. Different supports are needed for an individual to overcome his or her physical or mental problems. His support includes emotional support, physical support, and so on. As a family member or caregivers, we have the responsibility to provide extreme care and strong emotional support to them. The support from the family member and caregiver greatly impacts the recovery process of an individual. Several studies proved that. This article covers the caregiver’s and family members’ support by providing its importance and some of the roles of the family members and the caregivers.
