How to Start Your First Therapy Session?

It’s always intimidating if you are attempting anything for the very first time. And it’s even worse if people see that thing as a stigma in society. Mental health is one of them, it is very effortful for one who is suffering from any mental issue, it can be anxiety, mild depression, or anything. It can be mild to severe mental health issues. So, it becomes confusing if one is having therapy sessions for the very first time. What should be there in their mind when they are having their first therapy session? However, it is an important step toward improving mental health and well-being. This article covers how an individual should keep in their mind if they are having any kind of therapy session for the first time. What is the stigma about therapy sessions in society? And how one should behave or react when they are having their first therapy session.

1) Be Open-Minded:

It is your first time so, questions from the therapist can be straight up and you might hesitate to answer. But keep this thing in your mind that they are there to help you. If you don’t feel comfortable with them, how can they solve your issues? They may ask questions that straight forward but don’t hesitate to answer their question and feel comfortable.

2) Be Honest:

Be honest with your therapist about your feelings, thoughts, and other concerns. They are trained in a way that could be helpful to you if you provide them with information honestly. They provide you with support and guidance if you give them the right or accurate information.

3) Arrive Early:

It is always good if you reach your destination on time. Arriving early will give you enough time to relax and settle in the environment easily. So, reach before time.

4) Be Patient:

Its okay if you feel nervous at first, or become unsure of it. But being in front of the therapist is one of the safe spaces to explore ourselves, our feelings, and our thoughts. And it’s totally normal if you take time to open up in front of the therapist. Just be patient.

5) Ask Question:

It is human nature that they hesitate to ask questions. If you are having any doubts regarding the session before or after asking questions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, clearing doubts will help you easily understand yourself.

6) Share Your Goals:

Share what your goals are, and what you want to achieve through therapy. If you share you goals with your therapist, it would to easier for you and your therapist to achieve your goal effectively.

7) Trust the Process:

Nothing shows its ultimate result quickly or the next day. Likewise, therapy takes time to show its results. In between you may show uncontrollable different emotions but trust the process. It takes time but shows good results.

8) Trust Your Gut:

If you feel uncomfortable sharing your feelings and thoughts with one therapist and if it feels like this therapist is not a good fit for you, you can change your therapist and restart everything.

9) Take Notes:

If you are having any kind of therapy, the therapist usually gives you homework too. Take notes on what your homework is and try to complete it. These little homework works are the way to assess you and to see your progress.

10) Stay Committed:

Consistency is an important thing if you want your therapy to be effective. Regularity to the scheduled session is important. Without attending sessions, the therapist would not be able to assess you and give you guidance and support.

Your therapist may ask you what you do, where you belong to what is your current situation. Prepare and answer these basic questions honestly. Therapists usually ask these kinds of questions to establish rapport with the patient. Don’t pressurize yourself too much. If you feel comfortable, then share your details. Make a list of the things you want to ask it could be regarding your past experience, relationships, and symptoms. Don’t get triggered if your therapist asks too many personal questions. And it is their work to listen to you and protect your words. Therapists always ensure confidentiality which means the words you say in front of them will remain only with them. The first time is always confusing but with regular sessions, you will get used to it.
