How BTS is supporting young people’s Mental Health

BTS- the Bangtan Boys had huge fans worldwide and their songs, albums, and music made more impact on people. Many researchers noticed that the BTS made a positive impact on young people’s mental health. Their campaigns and their open interview about their mental health crisis encourage their fans and followers to prioritize their mental health and improve their well-being. 

Who is BTS 

The BTS is a K-pop band in South Korea and the BTS is also known as The Bangtan Boys. It began to form in 2018 and debuted on June 12, 2013, under Big Hit Entertainment. The BTS  group had seven members they are: Jin (Kim Seok-Jin), J-Hope (Jung Ho-Seok), V (Kim Tae Hyung), Suga (Min Yoon Gi), RM (Rap Monster), Jimin (Park Ji-Min), and Junghook (Jeon Jeong Guk). Presently the BTS has become popular around the world and they have separate fans; they are called BTS ARMY. BTS breaks many YouTube records of views for songs like “Boy with  Love,” “Dynamite,” and “Butter.” 

Interviews and Narratives Express Mental Health

The members of the BTS openly shared their conflicts with their mental health, such as anxiety, depression, and doubt in themselves in many personal interviews. BTS released fictional  narratives named “The Notes.” The characters in these narratives are created to face many emotional struggles and conflicts; through these characters, the members express their own experiences of mental health issues and struggles. Not only their narratives, but their song’s lyrics also had a strong and deep meaning about mental health, and that may have had an impact on their young listeners.

Similarly, the song “Epiphany,” sung by Jin in the album “Love Yourself:  Answer,” had lyrics such as “I am the one I should love in the world,” delve into self-acceptance and self-love. These lyrics may encourage their listeners to accept themselves and increase their self-love. In 2020, the BTS members shared their own experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic period. RM mentioned that he faces the feeling of powerlessness in the starting stage of the pandemic, and he hopes that their songs could provide comfort to their listeners.

In the same year, Suga shared his mental health struggles and the lyrics in “Blue Side” convey the feeling of loneliness and pressure of fame, reflecting his depression and how he won the battle of the period. Like all these, the BTS members communicated their possession battles to their fans and encouraged their fans to improve their mental health.  

Posts on Social Media and Live

The BTS members use social media such as Instagram and V Live to make connections with their fans. By using these platforms, the BTS members share messages about their own struggles and express their encouragement and support, to their fans. Taehyung shared his uncertainties and empowered his fans to create their unique qualities by utilizing Live. Like these, each member of the BTS always made awareness to their fans and followers. 

Lyrics and Mental Health

Emma, a fan of BTS, shared her words that the positive and strong messages made her happy and smile even though she had gone through the hardest days. This evidence proves that the BTS songs made an impact on their mental health. The band’s music empowers their fans to overcome their mental health challenges with courage and seek support and guidance from other people.

The following song’s lyrics prove that their music makes an impact on their fans’ mental health. The lyrics from  “Not Today” convey resilience and determination. Especially the chorus, “If you can’t fly, run,”  encourages the listeners to face their challenges, no matter how difficult it is in their journey. The song “I’m Fine” shows the importance of identifying inner strength and being true to oneself. The  “Spring Day” gives the message of hope and healing. Like these lyrics, every song by the group has a message for the listeners.

Hope and Inspiration

They share their journey with their fans, providing hope and inspiration to overcome mental health challenges. Their success story is a reminder to individuals that anybody can overcome struggles, and their success cultivates a sense of positive thinking and motivation in their fans. The honest expression about BTS’s mental health created a supportive community among their fans.

Where they support each other and make a safe environment to share their opinions and seek guidance. This friendly community provides a great support system to them and it positively impacts fan’s mental well-being. They emphasize the importance of seeking mental health professionals for any help, and they encourage their fans and followers to seek support from therapy and counselling.  

BTS and UNICEF 

On the sixth anniversary of the LOVE MYSELF campaign to promote UNICEF’s #OnMyMind the  BTS and BIGHT MUSIC have become partners with UNICEF. The fundamental objective of  #OnMyMind is to encourage children, young individuals, and families to improve their mental well-being. It advocates for the children’s and young people’s right to grow up in a safe and secure environment to protect them from neglect, abuse, and poor mental health. And their partnership focuses on providing awareness to children and young people about mental health. 

Music always heals our souls; research proves that music makes positive changes in our mental health. Hearing music is used as a technique to reduce some mental health issues like stress. Music motivates people if they are struggling. Their music made many changes in their lives and made them comfortable while listening to their music.
