The Indian film actor, Fardeen Khan who made his debut in Bollywood with the movie Prem Aggan in 1998, was recently seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut web series, Heeramandi, after a 14-year-long break from his acting career. Fardeen shared the mental health challenges faced in all these years. Some time back, he was also trolled for the weight gain and he recalled being a “worldwide trending topic”.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, the actor talked about his depression which feels like “a constant cycle of death and resurrection” to him. Fardeen stated that while depression might make everything seem meaningless, it also allows you to know yourself. He sees facing these gloomy periods as a cycle of death and resurrection and feels that the treasure can be found in such a deep dark cave. Although some days are difficult and he withdraws into his thoughts, he uses this time to understand his emotions better. Once he identifies the cause, it becomes easier to return to normal.

His words, “If there are things that are depressing you, it is a signal for you to think about something unfulfilled in your life. There’s something that you are not aligned with, there’s something not in sync”, reflect his positive attitude towards life. He views emotional downs as an opportunity for introspection and realignment, suggesting that addressing these issues can lead to personal growth and a more fulfilling life. Fardeen Khan gained a lot of appreciation for his recent role in Bhansali’s Heeramandi.

However, his experience of trolling due to weight gain made him realise that “people would find joy in someone else’s misery and despair”. Although he has been thick-skinned throughout, this statement does reveal his feelings of hurt and disappointment towards the audience. But it is courageous of him to talk about his experiences publicly, and we hope people find this inspirational and get the courage to open up about their mental health issues.
