What is Dream Analysis?

The most well-known application of dream interpretation as a therapeutic tool is in psychoanalysis. Dream analysis, often known as dream interpretation, is a method that Sigmund Freud devised to access unconscious content since he saw dreams as “the royal road” to the unconscious.

Dream analysis may also be used in conjunction with other therapeutic modalities such as Jungian, Gestalt, cognitive behavioural, and art therapies by mental health practitioners. When treating various mental diseases and other problems, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or those who have frequent and persistent nightmares, dream analysis is a useful tool. The intervention treats dysfunctional behaviour by using psychoanalytic theories. The goal of dream analysis is to identify suppressed memories that may be a factor in mental diseases.

The originator of dream analysis is Freud. However, the philosophy behind dream interpretation has changed since his time. The psychodynamic approach’s key neo-Freudian thinker, Carl Jung, maintained that ideas and conflicts that a person suppresses when awake are what give rise to dreams. He postulated that dreams represent the “actual” mental condition of persons when they are asleep by expressing their innermost wants, ideas, and conflicts.
