Award-Winning Journalist Alleges Workplace Abuse, Sheds Light on Mental Health Impact

Award-winning journalist and former News12 morning news anchor Annalisa Klebers has made grave accusations against her former employer. She claimed that since she demanded greater equity and compensation, she was abused at work. Following her request for a new contract with better pay, she allegedly experienced gaslighting, exclusion from meetings, and a worsening workload, all of which contributed to the decline in her mental health.

She describes having a psychotic episode and attempting suicide, which landed her in a mental health facility. She lost the work she was doing at the time and was placed on disability. From a psychological perspective, workplace mistreatment is a severe factor in degrading the mental health of an employee. In this particular case, there are several factors at play. Some of them have been listed below:

  • Excessive Workload: Annalisa Klebers mentions that she was given tasks beyond her role along with a massive workload around the time of the pandemic. This can lead to burnout where employees feel overburdened and are unable to fulfil the demands made of them, which results in getting emotionally tired and performing poorly.
  • Gaslighting: Annalisa claims that her supervisors were into gaslighting tactics where they often made her question her sense of reality. This can lead to confusion, anxiety and a sense of helplessness.
  • Psychotic Break: This is the result of an overwhelming amount of stress and emotional distress. Hallucinations, delusions and disorganized thinking are common symptoms here.
  • Alienation and Isolation: When a person is excluded from important meetings or decisions, feelings of worthlessness and low self-esteem can easily develop within the mind.

In Ms. Kleber’s case, her mind was unable to reconcile all the stress and anxiety. She mentions becoming catatonic and staring into space which are all signs of a psychotic break. People spend a big chunk of their day at their offices. The environment that the office harbours is a major predictor of how mentally healthy the employees are over there.

In this case, there was clear mistreatment of Annalisa Klebers which led to so many mental health issues over time. It is important that we address the importance of having a healthy work environment. Having a happy group of employees helps not only with their own health but it also enhances their performance at work. Ignoring this could lead to even more such cases where people might even take part in self-harm or suicide.
