Architectural Psychology: How Designed Environment Affects Our Mood?

Adjustments and balancing of a number of variables can affect the way people move around or communicate with each other in a place. The study of how humans individually or collectively interact with and related to their physical environment is architectural psychology. How one’s physical environment affects such things as his subjective experience of a particular physical environment, encounters with other people, the amount of stress experienced in an area, how much comfort has been provided to him by that location, etc.

Definition of architectural psychology: Explanation
Architectural:

Architecture means the built environment. The design of buildings is not only an art, but a science which, involves the formulation of plans for some purpose as well as the placement of different components in their natural surroundings. This way often addresses a wide range of architectural systems and components, along with several design issues.

Psychology:

It refers to an individual’s experience with the physical environment and the impact of this experience on their psychological state. People also refer to the perceptual factors that affect a person’s perception of the environment, including cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components.

Physical Environment:

A physical environment refers to the place where one resides, and its effects are extensive. For example, the impact of crowded personal space, the impact of design (room size, layout, placement), or the impact of external stimuli (temperature, noise). The individual’s bodily environment contains an extensive source of information that may affect the three core domains of cognition, affection, and behavior.

What’s a good example of architectural psychology?

The color of the architectural space may affect the mood of the user. The amount of space for activities can do the same. Positive reinforcement colors such as yellow, orange, and red can encourage students in school. In the hospital, too, soothing colours such as Blue and Green have a positive effect.

The Effect of architectural design on Psychology

You’re constantly walking around in and out of different buildings during your daily lives, the space you pass can have a huge influence on how you feel. You can feel gloomy in a dark unlighted place, while the well lit and ventilated area may make you feel welcome. A feeling of claustrophobia, where great open space provides freedom for you to move about and feel free, can also be encouraged by cramped and closed spaces.
The impact of buildings on people’s psychology has led architects to take very much into account their needs and wishes when designing spaces. Visual light adversely affects the ability of humans to produce melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate body functions such as digestion and sleep. And It also stimulates the production of serotonin and this can also lead to a person being less depressed.
