The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore, India, is a premier institution for mental health and neuroscience education and research. The Institute offers a variety of postgraduate programs, among others M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology, M.Phil. in Psychiatric Social Work and many more. The admission procedure for such programmes is competitive and involves an entrance test, which leads to interviews.
Program Details and Eligibility:
For each programme eligibility criteria and selection procedures are different. For example, a full time master’s degree in clinical psychology requires two years of MA. Sc in Psychology/Counseling Psychology/Psychological Counseling/Applied Psychology/Clinical Psychiatric Social Work.
The selection process shall take place by means of an aptitude test followed by counselling for the assignment of seats. Interviews are also carried out by the institute for those chosen. In order to be accepted, seats are secured on the basis of an interview performance, payment of a fee and verification of evidence.
M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology and social work: Training and Opportunities:
- Two years of supervised placements in clinical units such as adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, family psychiatry, behavioral medicine, neuropsychology, addiction medicine, community psychiatry, and psychiatric and neurological rehabilitation are part of the M.Phil. in clinical psychology programme offered by various institutions in Karnataka.
- Training in theory and practical aspects of clinical psychology, as well as research methodology, is part of the programme.
- The programme offers 29 seats, 23 of them under the “institute scholarship” category and 6 of them under the “institute scholarship” category.
- Moreover, in the category of foreign sponsorship there are three seats available.
- The Ph.D. program at NIMHANS has 18 guardianship slots available in the category of external financial support.
- Clinical psychology applicants who have applied for a fellowship from external funding agencies, foreign nationals, and staff with several years of continuous service can apply.
Application Fees:
For general category candidates, the online application fee is ₹1,500. Candidates, belonging to the ST or SC category have to pay ₹1,000 as an application fee. NIMHANS also offer a stipend of ₹25,000/- per month to selected students.
