In a historic move for Indian politics, Anish Gawande, a queer gay rights activist, has been appointed as the national spokesperson for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). At 25, Gawande is the latest addition to the Pink List India, which recognizes politicians who support the LGBTQ+ community. He is also known for his COVID-19 relief efforts through his non-profit organization, Youth Feed India.
Gawande’s appointment, announced on August 5, marks a significant step forward. As national spokesperson, he will represent the party across various media platforms and contribute to policy discussions, including manifestos and election strategies. “I hope this role encourages other young queer individuals to come out and pursue their dreams,” Gawande stated.
In an exclusive interview with The Free Press Journal, Gawande expressed his excitement about joining a party that aligns with his values, particularly regarding youth empowerment and political change. He praised the NCP for its commitment to these ideals.

Gawande, a Columbia University alum with a degree in Comparative Literature and a Rhodes Scholar from Oxford University, has a strong background in both activism and academia. Despite his lack of political connections, he is grateful for the NCP’s trust and is eager to apply campaign strategies from his experiences in the US and UK to Indian politics.
Inspired by his grandfather T. K. Tope, who played a key role in drafting India’s Constitution and served as a prominent educator and political leader, Gawande aims to continue this legacy. His appointment represents a milestone in Indian politics, showcasing increased diversity and acceptance. Gawande’s leadership is expected to inspire other young queer individuals and drive innovative political strategies, advancing inclusive change in Indian politics.
