The Marubo tribe of the Amazon rainforest living in remote isolation for millennia gets hooked up by an internet connection due to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite opening up them with numerous diverse opportunities as well as challenges. This act has primarily breached their isolation and preserved their unique culture and language.
Who is the Marubo tribe?
The Marubo tribe is a cultural indigenous group of the Amazonian tribe of 2000 members inhabiting the southwestern region of Brazil. Out of all the tribal community inhabitants, they are the most powerful. The Marubo tribe is particularly known for their exclusive cultural habits and are very down-to-earth people with traditional belief systems along with former methods of upbringing.
Though most of the world has had decades to grapple with the repercussions f the surprising internet benefits, groups like these living in remote locations are playing catch up to combat screen exposure and its utter negativity. They came to know about the benefits of World during the eighth of 2022 and since then they have been experiencing both progressive as well as detrimental effects of the internet
One of the elderly members of the tribe claimed that everyone was happy when it arrived as it clearly brought up astonishing benefits including video calls with faraway loved ones and expressive emergency calls for help. But by that time things have worsened.
Impact on the Tribe
The tribe faces numerous fundamental dilemmas regarding the exposure of the internet and its overuse by individuals. It is causing a degradation of the unique cultural beliefs and the traditional system of the community. “Young people have gotten lazy because of the internet, they are learning the ways of white people “These are the negative comments that came to light on interrogating the locals and heads.
The young are glued to their screens and always on phones chatting with friends and accessing inappropriate explicit contents. Alfredo, the head of the tribe expressed his remorseful concerns to the New York Times. He specifically is troubled by the sexual and adult content spread, he claimed young boys are forwarding this stuff through chats and romanticising the Western culture of openness. Some even observed more aggressive sexual beaches. For such reasons, they have limited the usage of the internet by only a couple of hours during the morning and five hours in the evening.
Internet a boon as initially claimed
The internet’s arrival was definitely a boon in certain aspects. The antennas installed by American entrepreneur Allyson Reneau have improved emergency response. Traditionally the tribe used to get hold of amateur radios to relay messages across villages reaching out to the authorities but now this is spontaneous. Some believe the internet could offer new autonomy to the tribe in terms of communication and access to information. It can be helpful to reach out and spread their own stories
Perhaps despite all of these unsurprisingly for the soon-to-be trillion Elon Musk, the results haven’t been as fruitful as expected. So this tribe being new to the game of the internet can already foresee the consequences but sure as shit hope they don’t find out about the Two girls, one cup. Now the Marubo tribe residing along the ituà River in Brazil are not entirely isolated prior to the implementation of Starlink.
